Verification is the most important step in a used car purchase. Unlike a new car where everything is fresh from the factory, a used car carries a history — some visible, some hidden. At Multi Brand Automotive Hub Pune, every pre-owned car goes through a rigorous 150-point verification before we recommend it to a buyer. Here's what that process looks like.

Document Verification: The Foundation

Start with documents before you even look at the car physically.

  • Original RC Book: Verify chassis and engine numbers match the car
  • Seller's ID: Name on RC must match seller's Aadhaar/PAN exactly
  • Insurance Certificate: Check validity and whether any claims are filed
  • PUC Certificate: Pollution Under Control — must be valid
  • Service Records: Dealer stamps or authorized service history
  • Road Tax Receipt: Ensure lifetime tax was paid (relevant for older vehicles)

Online Verification via VAHAN

Visit vahan.parivahan.gov.in and enter the vehicle registration number. You can verify:

  • Current registration status and validity
  • Owner name and number of transfers
  • Fuel type, engine, and chassis number
  • Blacklisting or NOC status
  • Fitness certificate validity

Expert Tip

VAHAN verification is free and takes 2 minutes. Never skip this step — it catches stolen vehicles and fraudulent listings.

Checking Loan/Hypothecation Status

If the RC shows a bank or NBFC under 'Hypothecation', the car has an active or past loan. For an active loan, the seller must provide a bank-issued NOC before you can transfer ownership. Without the NOC, the bank can theoretically repossess the car even after you've purchased it.

Physical Verification

Cross-check the physical chassis number (usually stamped on the firewall or floor) and engine number with what's listed on the RC. Even a single digit mismatch voids the transaction and indicates possible fraud.

Paint and Body Verification

Use a paint thickness gauge (available for ₹500–₹2,000 or via professional inspection services) to detect filler-repaired accident panels. Normal factory paint reads 80–120 microns. Readings above 200 indicate repainting over filler, meaning the panel was damaged.

Engine and Transmission Check

A cold-start check is the most revealing. Start the engine from cold and listen for knocking, ticking, or rough idle. Smoke colour tells a story: blue = burning oil, white = coolant leak, black = rich fuel mixture. Check transmission fluid colour — brown or burnt-smelling fluid indicates neglected maintenance.

Third-Party Inspection

The final and most important step. Hire an independent mechanic or a certified inspection agency to do a comprehensive check. Services like My Car Check, CARS24 inspection, or a trusted independent garage provide written reports for ₹500–₹2,500.

What We Do Differently

At Multi Brand Automotive Hub, all pre-owned cars are inspected by our team before being presented to buyers. We share the full inspection report, insurance claim history, and RC documents with you before you make any payment. Our goal is complete transparency.

Expert Tip

We also assist with RC transfer — handling all paperwork so ownership is in your name within 30 days of purchase.
